2 Out of Many, One Malcolm Forbes, the American entrepreneur and founder of Forbes magazine, once defined diversity as "the art of thinking independently together." at seeming dichotomy is at the heart of this issue of DS News, our annual celebration of diversity and inclusion within the mortgage and default servicing industries—the ways our differences encourage us to evolve beyond our own limited personal worldview and continue growing, learning, and becoming better. is month, we'll look at how the industry is embracing D&I—what's working, what still needs work, and why leveraging the qualities that make us each different and distinct can be a business boon. In our cover story, "More an the Sum of Its Parts," DS News' David Wharton speaks to D&I experts from more than a half-dozen servicers and service providers, checking in on the diversity and inclusion initiatives they're most excited about, the lessons they're learning from them, and where that journey is taking them. Addressing those unconscious biases is at the core of our next feature, "What's Your Bias?" in which DS News speaks to Charmaine Brown, Director of Outreach and Engagement in Fannie Mae's Office of Minority and Women Inclusion, about the types of implicit bias lurking in all of us. In "Much Left to Do," Nikitra Bailey, EVP of the Center for Responsible Lending, examines how, some five decades after the Fair Housing Act of 1968 became law, the playing field remains uneven for some when it comes to achieving the American dream of homeownership. What can be done to promote a more equitable housing industry? Finally, in "e in, Red Line," Kevin Stein, Deputy Director of the California Reinvestment Coalition, explores the history and legacy of redlining within the housing industry, and why some real estate professionals are reporting that borrowers of color with good income and good credit are still finding it challenging to get loans to purchase homes. How can the industry work toward a more equitable system for all? If the principles of diversity and inclusion are about anything, they're about recognizing that no one person has all the answers—each of us brings our unique perspective to the table, one piece of a larger puzzle. But when those pieces are combined, there's no telling what sort of grand larger vision that collaboration will reveal.
