A deadbolt is pick resistant, cannot be opened using the credit card trick, and is strong enough to ensure that the door cannot be kicked open. However, a deadbolt provides this security only if it's of good quality and installed correctly." –Mendel Jacobson, PP Materials BEST PRACTICES Lock It Up: POINT— COUNTERPOINT a division of FJM Security Products A typical lock offers little protection against break-ins. In fact, a seasoned thief can enter the average home with little more than a flimsy credit card. Improve the level of security of vacant properties with cylinder deadlocks or tubular deadlocks to supplement basic locks already in place. Deadlocks, or deadbolt locks, offer more protection against jimmying. Double tubular deadlocks require a key to open the door from either side and are especially useful for deterring burglars and preventing them from a fast getaway. GROUND FORCES "When using lockboxes for shared key access to properties, providing secure access to keys and meanwhile ensuring that the lockboxes are not easily taken once accessed are both important. Lockboxes with a separate combination for the shackle and key compartment are an important deterrent for lockboxes walking off and offer better security. Conversely, lockboxes with front opening access that jimmy easily offer very little security." –Matthew Weiss, ShurLok, Deterring Doors: The main access points of a property are its doors, and it's not just important but critical to ensure the types of resources used in manufacturing these entry points are of the strongest, practically impenetrable materials. Installing anti-theft steel security doors is an optimum choice for property owners. Anti-theft security hinge pin nuts as well as locks with steel-reinforced shanks or reinforced door jambs also make it more difficult for intruders to enter. For properties with sliding doors or windows, anti-jimmy bars are a practical tool to ensure they remain closed. "The FBI reports that 84 percent of the homes broken into are from kicked-in doors. Reinforcing door jambs helps eliminate people from kicking in doors. Particular reinforcing products on the market can be installed on any wood frame inside a main door and instantly make the old wood frame into a steel frame, allowing any door to then be able to hold up to roughly 300 lbs. of force." -Mike Hajec, MFS Supply 53
