2 Thriving in 2019 In the early days of 2019, the road ahead for default servicing looks, in many ways, much the same as it did in 2018. While some speculate of an economic or housing downturn in the months ahead or in 2020, the shape of that hypothetical downturn is no more certain than when or if it will happen at all. ere are some eventualities that are easier to predict, however. Until such a downturn occurs, default volumes will likely remain historically low, even as interest rates are likely to continue rising in 2019. And so, for our February issue, DS News examines the evolving landscape of default servicing—what's changing, what's staying the same, and how servicers and service providers can adapt to thrive even amidst the current challenges. at begins with our cover story, "Looking for Solutions." In it, DS News' David Wharton speaks with representatives from Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, BSI Financial, DIMONT, and National Tax Search about how the industry is adapting to the current landscape—and how it should be preparing for what's to come. Next, Safeguard CEO Alan Jaffa brings us "Adapt, Evolve ... and Remember the Basics," which examines how field services companies need to balance property tech innovation against a commitment to the human element. In "Unlocking Loss Mitigation," Travis Rulle, SVP of Mortgage Operations, RoundPoint Mortgage Servicing Corporation, discusses the three critical elements servicers will need to when it comes to supporting their loss mitigation efforts in the event of a future downturn: data, technology, and people. For our last feature of the month, Hyland's Steve Comer, Director of Financial Services, is your guide to "Working in the Clouds," which breaks down the benefits of secure cloud-based sharing in default servicing. Finally, be sure to check out our Best in Servicing Tools guide, which profiles the companies at the forefront of providing the tech and tools servicers need to get business done, no matter what 2019 may hold.
