FROM OUR DESK From Flat Line to Front Line default servicing | in print and online for me rly PUBLISHER magazine Mark Hulme The year is off to a positive start. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has laid out the rules and regulations to set the foundation for a revived and polished industry, calming the widespread unsettling uncertainties that threatened to undo progress made thus far. Economists are even turning bullish on the housing market itself, with projections that it will soon start appreciably contributing to economic growth, as has been housing's historical role in recessionary battles. As professional warriors and veterans of the trade emerge from a housing crisis of epic proportions, the good news is sometimes tarnished by the realities of fallen comrades and the enormity of the transformation of the past few years. Rising above the debris, however, are those companies that were able to maintain a standard of excellence in spite of unforgiving market conditions and calloused adversaries—a feat effected, no doubt, because their values of integrity and teamwork remained intact through even the worst of times, strong enough to withstand the inner industry turmoil. Recognizing the value of such resiliency and fortitude, we're prouid to bring you the 2013 edition of our annual lender/servicer profile issue, highlighting 25 companies that are doing stellar work in the realm of lending and servicing. We have compiled the stats, the facts, and the opinions that make this issue a must-have reference for the entire year. Each profile presents a breakdown of the need-to-know details researched from financial filings and industry analysts so that you can formulate your own opinion and assessment of these potential industry partners, theorize on the principles and practices that have helped them endure, and size them up side-by-side. Then, take a few minutes to pore over this month's Point-Counterpoint for expanded analysis on the progress the country—and the industry—are getting credit for. Housing is back from the brink thanks to innovation and cooperative effort, but there's work ahead to be done to keep us on the path forward. As the innovators and the leaders of housing finance and real estate continue to create solutions that improve efficiency and increase transparency, DS News will to be right there to provide the most up-todate information and compelling content that raise the bar and the level of conversation. Help us accomplish this mission by sending us your feedback and suggestions to editor@ dsnews.com. And stay plugged in with the latest default servicing news through our various mediums: print, online, broadcast, and social media.
