data-driven, quantitative management tools were first applied in manufacturing until Jack Welch, former CEO at General Electric, adopted it at GE. Now, large financial institutions also use Lean Six Sigma. The firm has incorporated the strategy into key business processes and also hired Kevin Divine as director of Six Sigma to assist employees with learning the new process. For the most part, law services have been performed the same way for hundreds of years. Its a paper mill, says Divine. We wanted to start looking at what causes rework, defects, errors, and inefficiencies so we can create a more reliable and repeatable process. This is not a passing fad, not a management flavor of the week. Six Sigma is in the firms DNA, said firm founder Matt Hunoval. Training for Learn Six Sigma takes place at UNCs Charlotte campus in a five-week program customized specifically for the firms practice. Through the training, employees will be skilled in quickly identifying defects and redundancies and eliminating waste, which should translate into faster processes done with fewer errors for the firms clients.
