2 Uncovering New Paths As I write this, we're on the eve of a presidential election and still amid an ongoing global health crisis. I don't think I'm going out on a limb to suggest that it has been a long year for all of us. And yet, even in the face of more challenges to come, we work together to find a way forward. It's true of us as a nation, and it's true of us as an industry. In this November's issue of DS News, we look at some of the ways those paths forward are being trailblazed. In our cover story, we speak with Perry Hilzendeger, Home Point Financial's recently appointed President of Servicing, and a 30-year veteran of the mortgage industry. Hilzendeger discusses the benefits of in-house servicing, lessons from the pandemic, and why the little things matter most. Next up, Max Simkoff, the Founder and CEO of States Title, brings us "Stress, Safety, and Survival"—an examination of how a global tragedy has tested the real estate industry, exposed cracks, and presented opportunities. In "e Road to Innovation," Michael F. Sullivan of Codilis & Associates, PC, explores how AI, mortgage servicing, and quality control are showing the way forward for servicers. e focus then shifts to the Golden State in our "Back to the Future" feature. In it, Rosemarie C. Hebner and Eric D. Houser of Houser Law discuss how California has taken a "time machine" to the era of Dodd-Frank reform to protect consumers from federal abatement of the CFPB. Finally, in this month's "Quick Take" short feature, Anita Bush, VP, Mortgage Servicer, FICS, discusses how servicers can ease the process for borrowers by following a few simple steps. Check out her insights in "Making Forbearance More Effective." Welcome to the November edition of DS News.
