Of those, 27 percent—or 163—have since fallen behind on their modified payments, SIGTARP reports. At 27 percent, Wyoming's HAMP redefault rate is the same as the nationwide average. The agency watchdog says homeowners are "redefaulting throughout the nation" at an "alarming rate." Nationwide, some 33,000 borrowers with HAMP mods have fallen behind on their modified mortgage payments as of September month-end, costing taxpayers $972 million in incentives paid to servicers and investors for their loan workouts, according to the special inspector general.
