2 President Obama was widely castigated for uttering this phrase during a stop on the campaign trail in 2012. e media gasped. Pundits rushed to both defend and tear down the president. Political ad producers counted their money as visions of Super PACs danced in their heads. e invincible Obama had finally made a mistake. But as politically tone deaf as the statement was, in context there was a true underlying principle: Nobody gets to the top without help along the way. In business, just as in life, we build on the greatness and guidance of those that went before us. In fact, most of us can point to one or two people that got us started, guided us, and made all of the difference. is month, DS News asked five different industry leaders to give us their recollections of the mentors in their lives. Like many, for me, the mentor that set me on the right path was my father. He taught me a number of lessons that have implications both in business and in life. e most practical was how to write. He wasn't an editor. He was a firefighter who went back to college later in life, but I cannot tell you the number of hours that we poured over each piece of written work that I ever produced early in my life. Sentence by sentence, word by word, he was relentless. I had to defend every choice. He taught me that language was a tool that when harnessed correctly had the power to change minds and hearts. Whatever my role (lawyer, advocate, editor, or other), I'll always owe any success that I have to him. Also this month, Brian Honea spoke with former FHFA chief Edward DeMarco about his views on the current state of the housing market and current state of housing policy. Want to know how he feels about the job his successor is doing? Read on. Continuing on the mentorship theme, Kerri Panchuk sounds the alarm on a growing concern in the appraisal community: ere is very little new blood coming into the profession. In her piece "In Search of the Next Generation," Panchuk goes into detail on the underlying causes of the problem and how the industry is responding. We look up to our readership of dedicated industry professionals as well. Is there something going on in the market that you would like to see covered? Have an idea for a new type of feature? We want to hear about it. Drop us a line and let us know how we're doing. Send us an email at editor@dsnews.com or follow us on Twitter @DSNewsDaily and join in on the conversation.
