2 Within diversity and inclusion lie the keys to success in life and in business. Noted author, entrepreneur, and motivational speaker Stephen R. Covey once famously said that strength lies in differences, not similarities. Diversity and inclusion are all about embracing all of our differences, those both visible and not visible. e marketplace has sent the clear message that it will be necessary for businesses to adopt best diversity and inclusion practices in order to compete in 2016 and beyond, and the mortgage industry is on board. In June 2015, the Five Star Institute formed the American Mortgage Diversity Council, an organization comprised of industry leaders and advocates from the mortgage sector who are focused on shaping the industry's diversity agenda. In June 2016, Five Star hosted its first-ever Diversity Symposium in Dallas. In this special issue of DS News, we will hear from mortgage industry leaders who have put those best diversity and inclusion practices into action—and gotten results. is issue includes diversity perspectives from Carolyn ompson, President and Founder of Asons; Charmaine Brown, Director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion for Fannie Mae; Pamela Brown, Human Resources Manager, National Field Representatives; Tujuanna Williams, VP, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Fannie Mae; Cheryl Travis Johnson, COO, VRM Mortgage Services; Sharron P.A. Levine, Director, Office of Minority and Women Inclusion, FHFA; and Lola Oyewole, Human Resources Leaders, U.S. Operations, Ocwen Financial Corporation. Also in this issue, Kelly Brooks, CEO of Property Masters, takes an in-depth look at discrimination and diversity in the modern workplace—and just how far we have come. Our industry has indeed come a long way in the areas of diversity and inclusion. But we still have lots of work left to do. Let's do it together and find strength in our differences. We'd like to include you as well. Is there something going on in the market that you would like to see covered? Have an idea for a new type of feature? We want to hear about it.
