2 Following the Trends While a new presidential administration will certainly usher in new policies and tenets that could shake up our industry for the long haul, some up-and-coming trends are going to make an impact in 2017 as well. In this month's DS News, we examine some of those trends, as well as the what they could mean for the market and homeownership rates in general. First, in Sonya Mann's "Changing e Game" story, we sit down with former NFL football player Doug Brien to talk property management—and how he and business partner Colin Wiel—are using tech to enhance the industry. In "Transforming the Tenant," Vision Property Management's Jon Buerkert examines rent-to-own arrangements, positioning them as a great way to restore vacant and abandoned properties while also giving long-time renters a viable shot at homeownership. As Buerkert puts it, "Rent-to-own companies offer the occupant the opportunity to get the home back to where it is a functioning property again, one that's contributing to the neighborhood and raising local home values. In the process, residents have a place to live and learn what it means to be a homeowner, such as making the necessary home repairs and maintenance, making timely payments, and improving their credit." In the same vein, we also look at the role vacant and boarded-up properties play in community downturn in "Breaking Down Blight," a piece by Robert Klein of Community Blight Solutions and SecureView. Klein also considers recent clearboarding efforts—as well as efforts to phase out plywood—and how those can help fight blight at both the local and national level. Finally, in "Shooting for the Stars," BSI Financial Services' Michael Kittyle delves into the ever-increasing popularity of so-called rocket mortgages and how lenders can use technology to compete with them and better serve customers in a digital age. is month's issue is packed full of information to help you gear up for a robust and successful 2017—no matter what part of the industry you fall into.
