2 A Better Representation Our industry serves one of the most diverse populations in the world. American homebuyers hail from all countries, backgrounds, races, genders, and ethnicities, with each group tackling its own unique struggles along the way. In order to best serve this diverse culture, our industry must be diverse, too. Our ranks must understand the intricacies of these different groups, so we can better help them, advise them, and guide them on the road to homeownership. And we're getting there—at least if this month's issue is any proof. Full of stories, insights, and tips from unique perspectives across the sector, September's DS News shows us we're well on our way to better representing the people we serve. In our cover story, "Take Five," Joey Pizzolato delves into the real meaning of diversity, as well as how companies can implement meaningful, effective inclusion programs. "ese programs should be driven from the executive level, with quantifiable goals and training programs," he writes. Next, Aly J. Yale sits down with Stuart Ishimaru, Assistant Director of the CFPB's Office of Equal Opportunity and Fairness and its Office of Minority and Women Inclusion, in "Leading the Charge". With three grandparents interned during World War II and decades of work in the civil rights arena, Ishimaru knows first-hand what discrimination looks like. And he's actively working to make the industry—as well as the institutions that operate within it—a more diverse place. We've also got "A Decade of Change" by Auction.com's Jason Allnutt. An insightful piece on how the REO and foreclosure auction space has evolved over the last 10 years, it's a must- read story for anyone in the industry. In "One Way or the Other," Brent Chandler covers the recent uptick in first-time buyer activity, plus increased risk of delinquency these buyers pose. Could big data provide the solution we need to avoid another onslaught of American foreclosures? Finally, inventory may be down and so is demand, but that doesn't mean REO brokers have to take a pay cut. In "Elevating Business," Al Freedman offers a few ways struggling REO brokers can drum up business. It's a smart piece that lends welcome advice for those in the REO space. All in all, this month's DS News is a comprehensive and far-reaching issue that offers up something for everyone. I hope you'll find value in it.
