THE STATE OF AFFORDABILITY
The Midwest is home to the most affordable housing markets in the United States, according to data from the National
Association of Realtors. The Realtors Affordability Distribution Curve and Score examines the affordability of current housing
inventory at various income levels and assigns an affordability score to each state and the 100 largest metros. The Affordability
Distribution Curve shows how many houses are affordable to households ranked by income while the Affordability Distribution
Score is the measure which is intended to represent affordability for all different income levels in a single measure.
This data considers affordability for all income percentiles, not just the median income, and looks at affordability of active
inventory, or homes currently available for sale instead of homes that have already sold. A score of at least 1 indicates an
affordable market, while a score lower than one implies a relatively less affordable market.
